" They Paved Paradise and Put Up a Parking Lot "

The song Big Yellow Taxi has some pertinent lyrics for the possible fate of Cheltenham Park open space.
Originally written and performed by Joni Mitchell in 1970, this song has as much significance today as it did over 35 years ago.

They paved paradise and put up a parkin' lot
With a pink hotel, a boutique, and a swingin' hot spot
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got till it's gone
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot

They took all the trees, and put em in a tree museum
And they charged the people a dollar and a half to see them
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got till it's gone
They paved paradise, and put up a parking lot

Hey farmer, farmer, put away your DDT
I don't care about spots on my apples,
LEAVE me the birds and the bees please
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got till it's gone
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot
Hey now, they paved paradise to put up a parking lot
Why not?

Listen, late last night, heard the screen door slam
And a big yellow taxi took my girl away
Don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got till it's gone
They paved paradise and put up a parking lot
Well, don't it always seem to go
That you don't know what you got till it's gone
They paved paradise to put up a parking lot
Well now, they paved paradise
And put up a parking lot

I don't wanna give it
Why you wanna give it
Why you wanna givin it all away
Hey, hey, hey
Now you wanna give it
I should wanna give it
Now you wanna givin it all away

Hey, paved paradise, put up a parking lot
Paved paradise, and put up a parking lot

Council might well need to consider 50k zones, and roundabouts or similar features to deter trucks using the Parade as a shortcut to West Lakes Boulevard, and to deter the many speedsters. At the moment Cheltenham Parade could be renamed "South Road Junior" because that is what it has become. Yet, there is more traffic planned for both the Parade and Torrens Rd with a residential development. St Clair development even has its current entry/exit at the very black spot of the Torrens Road tragedy.
