Response to
“Community turns out in droves to protest Wellington weir”

I wonder if rural people realise that there are considerable groundwater resources in meto Adelaide. Even if not all these can be used for drinking water (an evolving technology anyway), much of the mains water still used for industry, gardens, sports fields etc could be switched to aquifer and treated water to save river/reservoir water. Several golf courses plus Morphettville racecourse already doing this. But the rub is that the aquifer in and around Cheltenham Racecourse may be much more substantial than these and may holdmire water than the proposed wier. Problem is that politics and big business may be standing in the way of its potential use. Please bring this matter to attention of others.

Put Mr Rann on the spot

AdelelaideNow will put your questions on water restrictions to the Premier:

Why is Cheltenham Park not being acquired by our government for Adelaide's future water security, stormwater management and aquifer / groundwater recharge? Federal, state and local governmant should be working together on this. Action now could even help the SAJC and the horse industry by wiping off their accumulated debt to the SA government.

Matthew Abraham and David Bevan
Producer Ms Amy Taylor 08 8343 4407
Bevan says the program has been interested in the issue of stormwater for a while. He says they've seen correspondence showing people in the Cheltenham area that the racecourse is an opportunity to manage the stormwater issue facing the western suburbs. He says Charles Sturt Council has people on it who believe this as well. He says they're also interested in what could be done with Port Road. Withers says the vision is to turn the entire Port Road stormwater catchment into a process for filtering the water and pumping it into the aquifer. He says this will mean the concrete drain would be turned into a wetlands with permanent water bodies through it. He describes work that's already been done on the concept, saying it's proven that it will work. Withers says the project is in three distinct stages and explains how this will work. He says from the junction of Port and Old Port Roads, all the way to Westlakes, would be wetlands. Withers says the project has been a collaboration between the State Govt, the Natural Resource Management Board and the Council, spending up to $750 000 on design, consultation and engineering. He says this will form the basis of an application to the Stormwater Management Committee for funding. He gives the breakdown of funding to date into the project. He says the final cost of the project will cost between $30-40M, shared between Council and State Govt. Withers talks about other issues they've received funding for. He says Cheltenham is a lower priority but hopefully a similar project may be put in place their eventually. He says it would be dependent on what the SAJC do with the site regarding expressions of interest from developers. He says studies have shown that they won't need the whole area for stormwater management.
