Extract: Sale to save racing

Prominent SA businessmen and SAJC members, Rob Gerard, Wolf Blass, Robert Hill Smith and Harry Perks will review the final tenders and recommend the best options for the club.

The SAJC would receive an up-front lump sum payment from the successful developer with $500,000 initially being injected into prizemoney, hopefully in the first quarter of 2007.

It also hopes to retain an interest in development and moneys from the sale would be invested with some either going into the proposed revamping of Victoria Park Racecourse in conjuction with the Government, Adelaide City Council and the V8 racing car fraternity or installing a second track at Morphettville.

An independent trustee(s) would administer the remainder of the sale proceeds with an estimated $3.5 million per annum from income and capital growth churned back into prizemoney.

Mention should have been made of the cost to re-turf not only Victoria Park, but also Morphettville, to make either a viable horse-racing venue without causing injury to the horses. There's no need to do this at Cheltenham. That's why Cheltenham was used extensively recently when horses were made lame due to the poor surface at the Morphettville track.

This next article is so factually incorrect, particularly in terms of identified areas of Local Heritage and its significance, which is appalling and biased. Likewise, when has development in Adelaide ever been "visionary"?
